Plant of the month - Witch Hazel

Witch hazels (Hamamelis) are striking deciduous shrubs celebrated for their fragrant, spidery flowers that bring colour and life to the garden in the depths of winter. Blooming from late winter into early spring, their ribbon-like flowers appear in shades of yellow, orange, and red, often flowering on bare branches when little else is awake. Perfect for borders or woodland-style gardens, witch hazels are hardy, long-lived plants that add drama and seasonal interest at a time when it’s most welcome.

As the seasons progress, witch hazels continue to shine, with fresh green foliage in spring and summer turning to spectacular shades of gold, orange, and red in autumn. They thrive in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and prefer a sunny to lightly shaded position, where their flowers and fragrance can be fully appreciated. Low-maintenance and reliably beautiful, witch hazels are an excellent choice for gardeners looking to extend interest across the seasons and enjoy vibrant winter colour and scent.
