Description

Common name: Zebra Haworthia ‘Big Band’

Latin name: Haworthiopsis attenuata ‘Big Band’ (often still sold as Haworthia)

Best position in the home: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sun, especially in the morning. A sunny windowsill or a bright shelf is ideal. Avoid very low light, as this can lead to leggy growth.

Water requirements: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, especially in winter when growth slows. As a succulent, it stores water in its leaves and is highly drought-tolerant. Does not require high humidity.

Home impact: With its bold, white-striped leaves and compact shape, this plant adds a modern, architectural feel to any space. Ideal for desks, windowsills, or small spaces. Generally considered non-toxic, making it suitable for homes with pets.

Potential height at full growth: Typically grows to around 10–20cm in height, with a similar spread.

How to look after it: Place in a bright spot with plenty of light. Use a free-draining cactus or succulent compost. Water only when the soil is completely dry, and ensure the pot has good drainage. Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a diluted cactus feed. Avoid overwatering, as this is the most common cause of problems. Repot infrequently, as it prefers to be slightly rootbound.

Beginner friendliness 5/5

Practically Thrives on Neglect! This is an ideal plant for beginners or anyone who forgets to water. It’s very forgiving and low-maintenance, as long as it isn’t overwatered.

Haworthias are slow growers and may produce small offsets (baby plants) around the base, which can be separated and propagated. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so less is definitely more with this one.
