Description

Common name: Peperomia (Radiator Plant)

Latin name: Peperomia spp.

Best position in the home: Peperomias prefer bright, indirect light but are quite adaptable and can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch their leaves. They’re ideal for desks, shelves, and smaller spaces, and do well in living rooms, bedrooms, or offices.

Water requirements: Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Peperomias store moisture in their leaves, so they are more tolerant of slight underwatering than overwatering. Water less frequently in winter and avoid letting the plant sit in water. They are happy in average household humidity.

Home impact: Peperomias are compact and stylish, perfect for adding greenery without taking up much space. While not known for strong air-purifying qualities, they contribute to a calming indoor environment. Generally considered non-toxic, making them suitable for homes with pets.

Potential height at full growth: Typically grows to around 20–40cm in height, with a similar spread depending on the variety.

How to look after it: Place in bright, indirect light and water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Use a well-draining compost and ensure the pot has good drainage. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser. Keep in a warm environment and avoid cold draughts. Repot only when necessary, as they prefer to be slightly rootbound.

Beginner friendliness 4/5

Easy Going! Peperomias are forgiving and low-maintenance, making them a great choice for beginners or anyone looking for an easy-care plant. As long as they’re not overwatered, they’re generally very happy.

Peperomias come in a wide range of leaf shapes, colours, and textures, from glossy green to rippled or variegated varieties. They are slow growers but reliably attractive, making them perfect for small spaces or as part of a plant collection.
